Abstract

Introduction: Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is the core therapy for patients with intestinal failure (IF). The prevalence of HPN continues to increase worldwide, but most of the studies on HPN have been based only on single center experiences and currently there are no well-established guidelines for pediatric HPN. This multicenter study was performed to analyze the current state of pediatric HPN in Korea. Methods: A paper-based survey on practicing HPN in medical centers affiliated to the Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology Hepatology and Nutrition was conducted. The survey was administered via E-mail. The questionnaire requests information on demographics, indications for HPN, patient discharge education, laboratory exam monitoring, and HPN-associated complications. Results: Common indications for HPN was Hirschsprung disease, intestinal pseud-obstruction, and malrotation/midgut volvulus. The main discharge educators were the nurse in charge and the pharmacist. Information was mainly provided by hand-outs. Patients who were clinically stable and had stable laboratory findings were followed-up at the outpatient clinic for a median interval of 4 weeks. The most common complication associated with HPN was catheter-related bloodstream infections, Staphylococcus aureus being the most frequent pathogen. Conclusion: This interim report of a multicenter study generally shows the current state of HPN in Korea.
